There's been plenty of speculation about who Patrick Roy might select as his assistant coaches.
One possibility is Guy Carbonneau, who won the Stanley Cup twice with Roy in Montreal. Carbonneau also spent three seasons as the Canadiens' head coach and had a 124-83-23 record in that role. "I have no idea," Carbonneau said about the possibility of Roy reaching out to him. "I haven't talked to him . it's up to him. He's got control of who he wants to have around him. He's going to have his reasons like I had when I was a coach here. I knew what I wanted around me and that's what I got. I don't know what he wants."

The Denver Post is suggesting strongly that the Colorado Avalanche discard veteran goaltender Semyon Varlamov.
From Mark Kiszla of the paper: "Patrick Roy? Coach of the Avalanche? That's awesome news for Colorado. And very bad news for goalie Semyon Varlamov. Nice knowing you, Varly. Now pack your bags. And get out. Hiring Roy was an inspired idea. . .His first job as coach should be to find the Avs a top-notch, stand-on-the-head, Vezina-worthy goalie the team has lacked since some guy named Roy left the building in 2003. A lost decade for the Avalanche can be succinctly described as a futile search for a goalie capable of leading a team to the Stanley Cup. No offense to Varlamov. But he's not it. He doesn't have it. . .Everything about Varlamov, from his goals-against average to his save percentage, shouts: Average. Pedestrian. Ho-hum."

Jean-Sebastien Giguere is excited to be coached by a legendary goaltender like Patrick Roy.
Roy was named the Avalanche's new head coach on Thursday. "I'm really looking forward to working with him as my coach," Giguere said. "I watched him growing up, and I played against him, and now I get to play for him. It's very exciting. And in all seriousness, I think he'll be good for (Semyon Varlamov) too. To have a man like him giving you pointers as a goalie, that's not too bad." Between Giguere and Roy, Varlamov will have a lot of experience to lean on. Varlamov's tenure with the Avalanche has been a mixed bag at best, but it wouldn't be surprising to see the 25-year-old break out under these conditions.
