|Assets:||Is a tremendous skater and a natural point producer from the back end. Often plays like a fourth forward on the ice, as he places constant pressure on opposing defenses. Packs an excellent wrister. Likes to initiate body contact. Can quarterback a power play with aplomb.|
|Flaws:||Is mistake-prone in the defensive zone, which negates some of his overall effectiveness. Still needs to add a little more consistency and discipline to his game. Injuries have become a problem for him recently, so he isn't nearly as dynamic since then.|

Mike Green: There's a lot of work to be done | 05/07/2013 11:11 AM
NewsThe Capitals have already turned the page on their loss and are focusing on fixing their mistakes for Game 4.
Impact"It's unfortunate," Mike Green said after the team's 4-3 loss. "We wanted to be up three, but we have a lot of work to do and we knew we would." The Capitals got the first goal of the game, then the Rangers held three one-goal leads as the Caps answered back twice.
Mike Green scores for second straight game | 05/06/2013 11:30 PM
NewsMike Green followed up his game-winning goal Saturday with a tying goal late in the second period of Monday's eventual 4-3 loss to the Rangers.
ImpactAt the time of Green's goal, the Capitals were all over the Rangers after New York took a 2-1 lead earlier in period. Then, Green snapped a shot in between Henrik Lundqvist's glove and helmet and it looked as if the Capitals were going to turn the game around. Despite tying the game again in the third on a Jay Beagle goal, the Capitals couldn't convert on a 6-on-4 power play for nearly two minutes at the end of the game and now lead the series only 2-1 instead of 3-0.
"Game over" Green has knack for OT goals | 05/05/2013 10:00 AM
NewsMike Green's Capitals teammates have taken to calling him "game-over Green" due to his propensity to score game-winning goals.
ImpactGreen was humble after his most recent game-winner, which lifted the Caps to a 1-0 win over the New York Rangers Saturday afternoon. "I think the whole game was patience - whoever was going to make the mistake first," Green said. "Just a lucky one tonight. What an effort before we got that power play by the guys that were on the ice, pressuring their D. They had no choice but to try to go off the glass and they made a bad play." His most recent overtime winner was the 18th game-winner of the talented blueliner's career and the eighth of which that has come during extra time. That's an impressive track record, especially for a defenseman.

NewsMike Green scored the lone goal in Washington's 1-0 overtime win against the Rangers on Saturday.
ImpactMike Ribeiro and Alex Ovechkin each recorded an assist for the Capitals, who now have a 2-0 series lead. Ovechkin also chipped in with seven shots on goal and seven hits. Steve Oleksy led the team with eight hits. John Carlson blocked a team-leading four shots.
Mike Green has hand in three goals in win | 04/27/2013 11:06 PM
NewsMike Green lit the lamp twice for the Capitals in their 3-2 overtime win against the Bruins on Saturday night.
ImpactGreen also had an assist, and he now has points in four straight games, seven altogether. When Green is healthy and going well, he is one of the best offensive-minded blueliners in the game. That he's playing so great now is a big plus for the Capitals entering the playoffs. Eric Fehr potted the game-winner, while Alex Ovechkin and Mike Ribeiro had two assists apiece.
More desperate Senators beat Capitals | 04/26/2013 11:08 AM
NewsThe Capitals earned one point against the Senators this season.
ImpactGranted, the Senators were playing for their playoff lives Thursday and the Capitals had already clinched, but the Sens currently are slated to face the Caps in the first round of the playoffs. Ottwa outshot the Capitals 25-4 in the third period and overtime. "They came to play tonight. They skate hard and they skate fast, they're on us and they put the pressure on and it's tough to create anything," Capitals defenseman Mike Green said. "But we just came out flat. I don't know what it is the last couple times we've played against them. But it's the way it's gone."
Mike Green seems finally healthy | 04/14/2013 10:51 AM
NewsMike Green is second among NHL defensemen in goals this season.
ImpactWith 10 goals in this 48-game shortened season, Green is one behind P.K. Subban. After missing games for an assortment of injuries over the past three seasons, Green finally seems relatively healthy. He should be productive for the remainder of the year.

Mike Green nets two goals Tuesday | 04/03/2013 10:10 AM
NewsMike Green potted two goals on Tuesday night.
ImpactThe Washington defender has been sidetracked by injuries again this season, but he has been picking up steam lately with four goals and one assist in his past three games. Mike Green scores, assists in SO win | 03/30/2013 10:04 PM
NewsMike Green enjoyed a two-point night with a goal and an assist in the Capitals' 4-3 shootout win over the Sabres on Saturday.
ImpactGenerally speaking, when the defenseman is in the lineup, he's very productive. Problem is, he's always getting hurt and this year he hasn't found his stride. The 27-year-old has five goals and 10 points in 21 games this year. Alex Ovechkin also scored and had a whopping 10 shots on goal. Troy Brouwer also scored, and he had an assist.

Caps' Green will be game-time decision Thurs. | 03/21/2013 3:40 PM
NewsMike Green (groin) will be a game-time decision Thursday night.
ImpactThe defenseman expects to play but coach Adam Oates hasn't confirmed his presence in the lineup. Green skated without any limitations Thursday morning and tried to make his case that he's fine to play to the team's coaching and medical staffs. "That's the only thing that's been holding me out, not being able to move. Now that I've got my mobility back I'm good," Green said. "It's just limiting. I didn't have the mobility I need to play and when that's missing it's very tough, especially with the speed of the game. It was just a matter of me getting that back and now that I do I'm ready." It sounds like he'll play.

The Washington Times
ImpactThe Caps are being incredibly cautious with Green, who hasn't played since aggravating his groin injury Feb. 27. "I mean, coming along here. Still a little bit of a ways away, but at least I'm back on the ice," Green said. Keep him reserved for now, but it does appear that Green is making progress.
Mike Green skates Friday | 03/09/2013 12:00 PM
NewsMike Greeen (groin) was back on the ice Friday morning.
ImpactAlthough that is good news, he was not with his teammates as he skated by himself. The Capitals are justifiably being cautious with their star defenseman. "I think he felt pretty good. I'll find out later from [head athletic trainer Greg Smith] after he ices down and all that and how he feels the next day," Caps' coach Adam Oates said. "You think it's healed but then as soon as you get real contact [it acts up again]. You can replicate as much as you want but until you get into a game in the heat of the moment and take an unguarded hit, you don't know." For now keep Green on your bench.
Mike Green (groin) is out Thursday | 03/07/2013 2:52 PM

ImpactGreen has been dogged by the groin injury for most of the season and coach Adam Oates admitted Monday he's not sure when Green will be able to return. Green hasn't played since Feb. 27, so he'll be eligible to return almost immediately. However, no one seems to know when he'll be healthy enough to get back on the ice without fear of aggravating the injury again.
Caps don't plan to shut down Mike Green yet | 03/04/2013 6:16 PM
NewsWashington coach Adam Oates doesn't know when Mike Green will be able to return from his aggravated groin injury, but he doesn't appear to hitting the panic button yet either.
ImpactHe was asked if the team has any immediate plans to shut Green down for an extended period of time to get him over his groin issue and he said: "I hope not. It's that injury that feels like it's healing. Maybe it's not. He played. I wouldn't say it was set back, he just doesn't feel comfortable, and we're just waiting for that moment where it's like, 'Okay, go again.' And we don't want it until he's closer to 100 percent."
Mike Green (groin) skips practice again | 03/04/2013 2:39 PM
NewsMike Green (groin) didn't skate at Monday's practice.
ImpactIt is the second straight workout he's missed since aggravating a groin injury last week. Green returned to the lineup on Feb. 27 from a groin ailment, but wasn't able to play at Winnipeg on Saturday and he didn't even travel with the team. Consider him day-to-day for now.

NewsMike Green has apparently aggravated his groin injury.
ImpactThat's why Green missed Friday's practice. "It's just not quite feeling right," Capitals coach Adam Oates said. "He played a couple games, got hit a little bit. It's just not quite right, so we're taking a step back until he heals." Green previously missed three straight games due to the injury.

NewsMike Green (groin) is ready to return to the Washington Capitals' lineup.
Impact"I'm 100 percent and ready to go," Green said. "The reason why I'm ready to play is I'm 100 percent and it was either battle through it on Saturday or else wait until I'm 100 percent so I could play back-to-backs, so here we are." Look for him to play on Tuesday.
Mike Green misses Saturday's contest | 02/24/2013 10:32 AM
NewsMike Green sat out his third game in a row Saturday with a groin injury.
ImpactGreen participated in the warmups prior to Saturday's game against Devils but was not able to go. "You've got to play it smart," Green said. ImpactGreen decided not to play on Thursday after being involved in the team's pre-game warm-ups. "I didn't feel ready," said Green. "And an extra day makes the biggest difference, so that was the decision we made." Green emphasized that they're erring on the side of caution when it comes to his injury. He might return on Saturday.
Caps' Green a game-time decision for Thursday | 02/21/2013 1:20 PM
NewsMike Green (lower body) will be a game-time decision for Thursday's game versus New Jersey.
ImpactHe was the first player on the ice Thursday morning and stayed out there to take part in the team's practice. However, he only skated lightly. "I need to be up in the play and when you don't have that explosion then I'm not going to be very effective," Green said. "It's frustrating but you gotta be smart. I've been through this before so I know what to do and what not to do. Just take it day by day here and hopefully I'll feel good enough to go tonight." If Green can play then coach Adam Oates said he may go with seven defensemen.

"He felt pretty good; he just didn't want to be explosive, but he felt fine with everything else." He should be considered questionable at best for Thursday's game though.
